SPORTS.CROWDS.POWER. Football under the Nazis

Football has a past that is deeply intertwined with the history of the society in which it was played. What significance does this history have for us today, and how should football be remembered?

The exhibition “SPORT. CROWDS. POWER. Football under National Socialism” is a project by what matters gGmbH and the Sports Museum Berlin. It demonstrates the significance of sport for the National Socialists and how they used football in an attempt to secure their power. Furthermore, the exhibition tells the story of football matches played in concentration camps and commemorates Jewish and non-Jewish athletes who were persecuted during the Nazi era. Above all, the exhibition raises the question of whether the power of football fosters solidarity or exclusion – then and now.

The exhibition is now touring as a traveling exhibition and can be seen at Kultur Kontor Hamburg from June 10 to August 5, 2026.

It is presented in cooperation with the Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg, the Stiftung Hamburger Gedenkstätten und Lernorte, and the World Jewish Congress. The exhibition is funded by the Alfred Landecker Foundation and the Behörde für Kultur und Medien. SPORT. CROWDS. POWER. was designed by Studio IT’S ABOUT.
