In the run-up to and during the UEFA EURO 2024, “Football and Remembrance” is offering a comprehensive programme for dealing with the history of National Socialism. Memorials, places of remembrance and museums are taking part in specific events throughout the country and especially in the vicinity of the ten host cities.

One step of our project "Building Bridges: Survey on Combating Antisemitism Through Football." is an online survey among stakeholders in European football. In summer 2023, more than 100 participants hailing from 14 different countries answered the questionnaire.

Sports, Mass Appeal, Power: Football Under National Socialism is an exhibition examining football under National Socialism, presented in cooperation with the Berlin Sports Museum, to be shown in Berlin in 2024.

The Evonik Industries company has been active in Holocaust education and remembrance efforts for many years. In February 2023, we developed for Evonik a seminar at the Memorial Site Mittelbau-Dora focusing on the use of forced labour under National Socialism.

Even today, the public is largely unaware of the role played by Germany’s ordinary uniformed police, the Ordnungspolizei, in perpetrating the Holocaust. Our EVZ project with the Villa ten Hompel historical site provided a deeper education opportunity to the police themselves.

A special light-rail train has been traversing Dortmund since late February 2023. Marking the 80th anniversary of the deportation of Jewish Dortmunders to Auschwitz, it transports the memory of that event into the present.

Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea FC are two clubs that are particularly committed to combating antisemitism. In February and March 2023, the Champions League matches between the two teams were an occasion to to share and deepen their commitment to this struggle. Many of their joint events highlighted the memory of Julius Hirsch, a Jewish German footballer on the national team.

‘Combating Antisemitism in Sport’ is a long-term project in cooperation with the World Jewish Congress. It brings together different efforts from across the sporting world internationally and aims to establish antisemitism as its own focal area within the sporting world’s anti-discrimination work.
